Heat and Temperature
HT7.1 Assess the impact of past and current heating and cooling technologies related to food, clothing, and shelter on self, society, and the environment. (mittens and shelter; partial).
Lessons: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm
Practice: Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move workbook · Hot Stuff: Heat, Temperature and Cooling workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook
HT7.2 Explain how understanding differences between states of matter and the effect of heat on changes in state provide evidence for the particle theory. (particle model; an early start on Grade 7).
Lessons: Winter Science at Home (Can you make frost in a can?, Why does salt melt ice?, What's inside a snowflake?) · Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?) · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move
HT7.3 Investigate principles and applications of heat transfer via the processes of conduction, convection, and radiation. (partial: heat loss through wool, foil and snow; an early start on Grade 7).
Lessons: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move
Practice: Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move workbook · Hot Stuff: Heat, Temperature and Cooling workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook
Interactions Within Ecosystems
IE7.2 Observe, illustrate, and analyze living organisms within local ecosystems as part of interconnected food webs, populations, and communities. (food web game and schoolyard count; an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom?
Practice: Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook · Our Living Planet workbook
IE7.3 Evaluate biogeochemical cycles (water, carbon, and nitrogen) as representations of energy flow and the cycling of matter through ecosystems. (partial: water and gas cycling in the jar and the bag; an early start on Grade 7).
Lessons: Our Living Planet (Can a jar keep itself alive?, Where does rain come from?)
Practice: Our Living Planet workbook · Food Webs: Who Eats Whom? workbook · The Water Cycle, Start to Finish workbook · Weather Detectives workbook
Mixtures and Solutions
MS7.3 Investigate the properties and applications of solutions, including solubility and concentration. (crystal-growing lesson; partial, an early start on Grade 7).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?)
Practice: Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Clean Water Challenge: Mixtures, Dissolving and Separating workbook · Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Grade 4 Rocks and Minerals
