Virginia Science Standards of Learning (2018). Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Scientific and Engineering Practices
6.1 Scientific and engineering practices: assess the credibility, accuracy, and possible bias of each source, and construct an argument supported by empirical evidence and scientific reasoning.
Lessons: Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers (Does salt make water boil faster?, Is that AI answer true?, Which source should we trust?)
Earth and Space Systems
6.3 Earth's tilt as it revolves around the sun causes the seasons (partial: sunlight angle and day length).
Lessons: Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From (Where does our classroom's electricity come from?, Can the wind power our school?, Why don't we use solar power everywhere?)
Practice: Sun, Earth and Moon workbook · The Reason for the Seasons: Tilt, Daylight and the Solstice workbook
6.6 Water has unique physical properties, and thermal energy has a role in phase changes (an adjacent-grade match: why ice floats).
Lessons: Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?)
Practice: Solids, Liquids and Gases workbook · Earth and Sky at Home workbook · Kitchen Chemistry for Families workbook · Winter Science at Home workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
6.7 There is a relationship between air movement, thermal energy, and weather conditions (an early, partial start: the chinook).
Lessons: Weather Detectives (Why does a chinook feel like spring in January?, Is it hotter by the slide?, Why do farmers care about the last frost?)
Practice: Weather Detectives workbook · Our Living Planet workbook · The Water Cycle, Start to Finish workbook
Force, Motion, and Energy
6.4 Radiation, conduction, and convection distribute energy (an early, partial start on a Grade 6 standard: mittens and snow slow heat loss; the three terms are not taught).
Lessons: Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move · Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From (Where does our classroom's electricity come from?, Can the wind power our school?, Why don't we use solar power everywhere?)
Practice: Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From workbook · Simple Circuits: Make It Light Up workbook
Earth Resources
6.9 Humans impact the environment and individuals can influence decisions related to energy and the environment (an adjacent-grade match: the letter or poster recommendation).
Lessons: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better · Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From (Where does our classroom's electricity come from?, Can the wind power our school?, Why don't we use solar power everywhere?)
Practice: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better workbook · Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From workbook · Our Changing Planet: Resources and Human Impact workbook
