Virginia Science Standards of Learning (2018). Every lesson comes with a printable teacher guide and student sheet.
Scientific and Engineering Practices
5.1 Scientific and engineering practices: compare and contrast data collected by different groups and discuss similarities and differences in findings (an adjacent-grade match: pooling class data).
Lessons: Evidence Lab (How do you know a fact is true?, Why do scientists repeat their tests?) · Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers (Does salt make water boil faster?, Is that AI answer true?, Which source should we trust?)
Practice: Evidence Lab workbook · Test the Claim: Science Facts, Myths and AI Answers workbook · Build It, Launch It workbook · How Your Body Works workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Think Like a Scientist: The Scientific Method workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook · Monsoon Science: Rain, Sun and the Nón Lá workbook
Force, Motion, and Energy
5.3 Investigate and understand the relationship between force and the energy of moving objects: changes in motion are related to net force and mass, and contact forces transfer energy when objects collide (an adjacent-grade match: egg drop and rocket).
Lessons: Build It, Launch It (Can you drop an egg without breaking it?, What makes a paper plane fly farthest?, How does a rocket push itself into space?) · Pushes, Pulls and Magnets (Why does a ball stop rolling?, Can a magnet work through a table?, How far will a paper clip jump?) · Forces and Motion: Crash, Push and Stop
5.4 Electricity flows easily through conductors but not insulators, and flows through closed circuits (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Simple Circuits: Make It Light Up
Practice: Simple Circuits: Make It Light Up workbook · Keep It Cool: Ice, Insulation and Staying Comfortable workbook · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm workbook · Steppe Science: Staying Warm on the Kazakh Steppe workbook
5.5 Sound is produced when an object or substance vibrates, and different media transmit sound differently (an adjacent-grade match: the string telephone).
Lessons: Sound: Can You See a Sound? (Can you see a sound?, Can a string carry your voice?, How do you make a high note or a low note?)
Practice: Sound: Can You See a Sound? workbook · Grade 4 Sound: Vibrations, Pitch and Echoes
5.6 Visible light has certain characteristics: the visible spectrum includes light with different wavelengths, and matter influences the path of light (the rainbow lesson; wavelengths are not taught).
Lessons: Earth and Sky at Home (Where do rainbows come from?, How do crystals grow?, How does a cloud form?)
Practice: Grade 4 Light and Colour
Matter
5.7 Matter has properties and interactions: matter is composed of atoms, and energy has an effect on the phases of matter (partial; atoms are not named).
Lessons: Kitchen Chemistry for Families · Winter Science at Home (Can you make frost in a can?, Why does salt melt ice?, What's inside a snowflake?) · Winter Science: Ice, Snow and Staying Warm · Solids, Liquids and Gases (Where does a puddle go?, Why does ice float?) · Hot and Cold: Particles on the Move · Kitchen Chemistry (Is it a new substance?, Where does the mass go?, Can red cabbage tell acid from base?)
Earth and Space Systems
5.8 Processes such as weathering, erosion, and deposition change the surface of the Earth (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape
Practice: Rocks and Erosion: How Land Changes Shape workbook · Living with Water: Salt, Rice and the Mekong workbook
Earth Resources
5.9 The conservation of energy resources is important: individuals and communities have means of conserving both energy and matter (an adjacent-grade match).
Lessons: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better · Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From (Where does our classroom's electricity come from?, Can the wind power our school?, Why don't we use solar power everywhere?)
Practice: Earth Day Investigations: Make Your School Better workbook · Power Up: Where Electricity Comes From workbook · Our Changing Planet: Resources and Human Impact workbook
