Free science simulations and interactives

26 free science simulations and classroom tools. Change one thing, watch what happens, and talk about why. No sign-up, nothing to install.

Science tools starting in grades K–2

Field Watch

A quiet-room wildlife game for the projector. Keep the room calm and animals visit six real habitats, each with a fact to learn. Every animal spotted goes into your class Field Journal.

Grades K–8

Class Graph Maker

Type in your class's results and get a clean bar or line graph to project or print. Built for the data step of every Fieldbook investigation.

Grades 2–8

Weather Station

A live thermometer for any town. Read the scale, compare cities, and log the day's temperature for a weather unit.

Grades 2–6

Water Cycle

Turn up the sun and watch water evaporate, condense into clouds and fall as rain or snow, then follow one drop of water on its journey.

Grades 2–6

Moon Phase Finder

Pick any date and see the Moon's phase, how much of it is lit and when the next full and new moons are. Pairs with our Sun, Earth and Moon unit.

Grades 1–8

Venn Diagram Maker

Sort words, numbers or pictures into two or three overlapping circles. Start from a ready-made sort or type your own, then print the finished diagram.

Grades 1–8

States of Matter

Heat and cool a box of particles and watch them pack into a solid, slide as a liquid and fly apart as a gas, with a live thermometer.

Grades 2–8

Sound Wave Lab

Play a tone, change its pitch and loudness, and watch the wave change shape. Includes a live microphone wave view to see your own voice.

Grades 1–8

Sun and Shadow

Move through the day and the year to see where the Sun is in the sky, how long a stick's shadow is, and how many hours of daylight any latitude gets.

Grades 1–6

Plant Growth Journal

Log your class plants' height every few days and get a growth chart that compares plants or conditions. Saved on your device, ready to print.

Grades K–5

Lab Stopwatch

A big stopwatch with lap times for experiments: time several trials, see the average and spread, and download the results.

Grades 2–8

Science tools starting in grades 3–5

Probability Lab

Flip coins, roll dice or spin a spinner hundreds of times and compare what happened with what probability predicts.

Grades 4–8

Measurement Converter

Convert length, mass, volume, temperature and time between metric and imperial units, with the working shown and a sense-of-size picture for each.

Grades 4–8

Mean, Median and Mode

Type in a set of numbers and see the mean, median, mode and range worked out step by step, with a dot plot that shows where each one sits.

Grades 5–8

Periodic Table Explorer

All 118 elements, coloured by family. Click one for its atomic number, mass, state, discovery and an everyday use, or highlight metals, gases and more.

Grades 5–8

Predator and Prey

Run a simulated meadow of hares and lynx. Change birth and hunting rates and watch the two populations rise and fall on a live graph.

Grades 5–8

Food Web Builder

Build a food web for a forest, pond or ocean by drawing arrows from food to eater. Then remove one species and see which others are affected.

Grades 3–8

Circuit Lab

Wire batteries and bulbs in series or parallel, flip switches and see which bulbs light, how bright, and how much current flows.

Grades 4–8

Solar System Scale

See the planets at true scale for size and distance, find your weight and age on each one, and work out how long light takes to reach them.

Grades 3–8

Rock Cycle

Melt, cool, weather, squeeze and heat rocks to see how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock turn into each other, with real examples of each.

Grades 3–7

Sink or Float

Drop objects into water, oil, salt water or syrup. Predict first, then see what sinks and floats and why, using mass, volume and density.

Grades 3–8

Lever Lab

Put weights on a seesaw and balance it. Discover the law of the lever (weight times distance) by experiment, then solve balance puzzles.

Grades 3–8

Cell Explorer

Tap the parts of a plant cell and an animal cell to learn what each one does, then compare the two and quiz yourself.

Grades 5–8

pH Scale Explorer

Test household liquids on a pH scale with a cabbage-juice indicator colour, from lemon juice to bleach, and mix acids and bases to see neutralisation.

Grades 5–8

Fair Test Planner

Plan an experiment step by step: question, variables to change, measure and keep the same, prediction and method. Prints as a one-page plan.

Grades 3–8

How to use science simulations well

A simulation is at its best right after students have tried the real thing, or when the real thing is too slow, too big, too small or too dangerous for a classroom: a predator and prey cycle that takes years, particles in a gas, the Moon over a month, a cell under a microscope. Ask for a prediction first, change one variable at a time, and have students explain what they saw in their own words. That is the same fair-test thinking every Fieldbook lesson builds.

Every tool page includes the science behind it, written for teachers, and questions to ask your class.
